US Republican senators to challenge Biden’s presidential election win

US Republican senators to challenge Biden’s presidential election win”

Yet another Republican South Carolina congressman says he will object to the electoral college certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

Cruz vowed to raise an objection to the electoral certification of the votes, the process over which Pence, as the President of the Senate, will preside on January 6.

Mr Muller said that, while the 1887 law governing how lawmakers validate the election is murky, most scholars believe that Congress lacks the legal authority to require the audit. That claim was made by Trump's press secretary, but Nevada officials have refuted it, and Trump's supporters have not offered any evidence of voter fraud.

Congress is mandated to certify the results on Wednesday before Biden is inaugurated on January 20. They are among a host of Trump allies who have alleged fraud in the November election.

Ted Cruz will lead 12 GOP senators who are still trying to overturn the presidential election for Donald Trump.

"Once completed, individual states would evaluate the commission's findings and could convene a special legislative session to certify a change in their vote, if needed", they said. The effort is unlikely to bear fruit, since both a senator and a House member need to object to a state's election outcome for it to be merely debated, and both chambers need to vote to either discard or uphold the challenge.

He said the argument from some of his Republican colleagues that having senators reject electors will increase confidence in elections is "nonsense".

"We are not naïve. We fully expect most if not all Democrats, and perhaps more than a few Republicans, to vote otherwise", they said.

Utah Rep. -elect Burgess Owens has said he will join a group of representatives challenging the election on the House floor.

What will happen on 6 January?

Ted Cruz, to reject Electoral College votes a threat to democracy. This scenario is seen as all but impossible since Democrats hold a majority in the House and some Republicans in the Senate have already said they will not contest the results.

So far, 12 Republican senators have said they will attempt to challenge, and possibly overturn the results in several states.

The decision by some Republicans to defy their leadership indicates a growing split within the party, the BBC's Washington correspondent Lebo Diseko says. But Biden spokeswoman Jen Psaki has described Mr Hawley's attempt as "antics". Georgia releases information about the number of people who voted but does not tally their votes until Election Day.

"Congress will certify the results of the election as they do every four years".
