Vic-NSW tensions flare after mask warning snubbed

Vic-NSW tensions flare after mask warning snubbed”

The new mask rule, which police will enforce from Monday with fines of $200, comes as NSW and Victoria grapple with coronavirus outbreaks.

Dr Young said a close contact of a Victorian case had already been identified in the Mackay region and a casual contact had been found on the Gold Coast.

'It does show that Victorians are understanding the real importance of going and getting tested, weather they are returned travellers, weather they've got any symptoms.

Five of the new cases are linked to a cluster at Berala in Sydney's west including four from the same household.

Australia's most-populous state of New South Wales on Sunday (Jan 3) reported eight new Covid-19 cases as new social distancing restrictions and mandatory mask wearing kicked in while neighbouring Victoria had three new cases.

Queensland has recorded one new case of the pandemic virus in hotel quarantine as authorities continue to monitor the situation in NSW and Victoria closely.

The State Opposition has hit out at long wait times for COVID-19 tests and called for more facilities to cope with the surge in demand.

'So if you are waiting, please bear with us, it is important that we get these tests done so we can continue the encouraging trajectory we on this Black Rock cluster'.

Despite the growing number of cases in Victoria, Queensland has not made any changes to its current border arrangements with the state, but chief health officer Jeanette Young said she was watching the situation closely.

"If they do not change the settings or introduce mandatory mask wearing and introduce a secondary ring of contact tracing, they will try to chase and chase and chase each case, and then they will see greater numbers of mystery cases emerging".

She said Queenslanders in Victoria and New South Wales should consider coming home.

"We know we have a likely starting point to December 21 - that is now at 10 or 11 days ago", Mr Weimar said yesterday.

'The choice we faced before Christmas was, do you hold people over and not let them go on leave after they have absolutely flogged themselves for nine months? We took a view that we needed to have the right balance of resources'.

Victoria reported three new cases today while NSW today reported eight.

"We are still concerned about a case that occurred yesterday where we still haven't managed to find links in terms of the Avalon cluster".

A golf club, cinema and a yacht club were all put on alert on Saturday evening after being exposed to coronavirus - with guests told they must isolate for two weeks.

"Anyone now in Queensland who has been in Victoria on or since 21 December should get tested immediately and quarantine at home or their accommodation until they receive a negative result".

There are now more than 50 sites which have been exposed to coronavirus.

"Victorians have a lot at stake here", Victorian health minister Martin Foley said.
