Iraqi court orders Trump arrest over Soleimani drone strike”

On Tuesday, as Common Dreams reported, the Iranian government issued a "red notice" demand for the Europe-based Interpol service to arrest Trump as well as 47 other us officials for their role in the killing of Soleimani.

Thursday, an Iraqi court issued an arrest warrant for the outgoing US President Donald Trump, as part of the investigation into the assassination of the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and the Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, in an American strike a year ago in Baghdad.

Soleimani, who commanded Iran's elite Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, played a lead role in exploiting conflicts in the region to expanding Tehran's influence via local militias, particularly in Syria and Iraq.

The decision to issue the warrant "was made after the judge recorded the statements of the claimants from the family of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis", according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council.

Trump later boasted that the strike on Muhandis and Soleimani had taken out "two for the price of one".

Trump previous year ordered the drone attack on the two top military officials and called it that two men were killed "for the price of one".

Besides Iraq, Iran too had in June issued an arrest warrant for Trump and 30 other United States officials, charging them with murder and terrorism.

The warrant was issued under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code. The investigative procedures continue, the court said.

Agnes Callamard, the United Nations special rapporteur for extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, has regarded the USA actions as "arbitrary" and "illegal".

The drone strike and subsequent deaths triggered major tension between the USA and Iraq. Iran also has an arrest warrant out for Trump in relation to Soleimani's death, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Monday.

It was the second time since June that Iran requested the global police agency arrest Trump for the assassination, but the request has not been acted on.
