Joe Biden to appoint Merrick Garland as attorney general”

US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland as his attorney general.

While introducing his nominee for attorney general, Biden said Garland's loyalty would not rest with the president, but the American law and constitution.

Judge Garland has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia since 1997, where he gained a reputation as a thoughtful and moderate judge.

Senate Republicans spurned Garland four years ago, refusing even to hold hearings when President Barack Obama nominated him for the Supreme Court.

Garland's anticipated attorney general nomination will likely reignite conversations on the Republican Party's refusal to acknowledge his 2016 SCOTUS nomination - despite the passing of SCOTUS Justice Antonin Scalia, the Associated Press reported. And that's when former University of Chicago President Ed Levi came in to help shore up the Justice Department after some bleak years under President Richard Nixon.

I am honored they accepted this call to serve at such a critical time in our nation's history, he said. Gupta headed the department's Civil Rights Division under President Obama.

Others said to have been in the running for attorney general were former Democratic Sen.

The Wall Street Journal added that Biden "has said he plans to make a priority of passing a law against domestic terrorism, and he has been urged to create a White House post overseeing the fight against ideologically inspired violent extremists and increasing funding to combat them".

"One of the most respected civil rights lawyers in America", Biden told reporters in Wilmington, Delaware as he announced some of the key nominations in the Justice Department on Thursday. Groups including the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund had championed Garland's Supreme Court nomination, but the extent of support from minority groups for the attorney general job was not immediately clear. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell never allowed a vote on Garland and the seat was taken by Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017. She previously worked as the head of the Civil Rights Bureau for the New York State Attorney General's Office. Doug Jones and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to lead the Justice Department.

He returned to the department for a brief stint in 1989 as an assistant US attorney.

William Barr, who appointed Durham before ending his term as attorney general last month, faced criticism for his willingness to intervene in criminal cases in ways that benefited Trump's political allies, such as Michael Flynn and Roger Stone.

One year later, after the firing of FBI Director James Comey, McConnell actually floated Garland's name as a replacement for that position, though Garland was said to be not interested.

Steve Fox, a strategic adviser to the Cannabis Trade Federation and no relation to the NCIA's Morgan Fox, wrote in an email to MJBizDaily that Garland is a "conservative" choice by Biden and indicated his organization wasn't exactly jumping for joy over the pick.
