Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine appears effective against new UK, South Africa strains

Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine appears effective against new UK, South Africa strains”

Moderna's vaccine was 94% effective in preventing disease in late-stage clinical trials, and it has already been given regulatory approval for use in the US, Canada, the European Union and Israel.

The study was conducted on blood taken from people who had been given the vaccine. In the first month of the year, our country will also receive the first 6,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. The vaccine is made with a piece of the virus genetic code, simple to switch, although it's not clear what kind of additional testing regulators would require to make such a change.

While scientists did not expect that a single mutation would completely upend efforts to stop the pandemic, it is still an important area of study because the coronavirus, like all viruses, constantly evolves.

The statement continued: 'The EU has acquired a broad portfolio of vaccines with different technologies.

"Laboratory study conducted by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch indicated the Covid-19 vaccine was effective in neutralising the killer virus with the so-called N501Y mutation of the spike protein", per Reuters.

The findings have not yet been reviewed by outside experts, a key step for medical research.

According to Phil Dormitzer, one of Pfizer's top viral vaccine scientists, the new strains of the virus, which have greater transmissibility, created fear among people that it was capable of evading antibody neutralisation elicited by the vaccine.

Experts believe vaccines will likely work against both variants - but at this rate, these more infectious mutant forms could easily outpace the USA vaccination effort if they become widespread.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious disease expert, told The Associated Press this week that the coronavirus variants don't appear to block vaccine-induced antibodies but that testing to be sure of that is underway in the USA and elsewhere.

"This is excellent news and a further crumb of comfort amid the huge levels of Covid-19 now circulating around the United Kingdom", said Michael Head, Senior Research Fellow in Global Health at the University of Southampton.

South Africa has not started mass vaccinations.

Called the Moderna vaccine, it's made by a U.S. company of the same name.

The coronavirus isn't changing as rapidly as other viruses such as flu or HIV, and its structure is more stable than the flu's, Bushman said, although that will need to be tracked.

Dormitzer noted another mutation found in the South African variant called the E484K, is also causing concern.
