UK lawmakers overwhelmingly approve England lockdown

UK lawmakers overwhelmingly approve England lockdown”

His remarks on Wednesday came as official figures showed the number of daily COVID-19 deaths in the United Kingdom was nearing a peak reached during the first wave in April.

Johnson said that he hopes that the country may fare well against the recent surge by February and inoculate the first vaccine dose to everyone in top four groups identified by the authorities. The death toll from the pandemic is now 76,423, one of the world's highest tallies.

This number varied in location, but the ONS's latest Covid-19 infection study found the figure for south-east England, eastern England and north-west England is estimated to be one in 45, the next highest behind London, which was one in 30.

There were 1,041 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test for the virus on Wednesday and a further 62,322 new COVID-19 cases.

The prime minister said that they are planning to vaccinate 70-year-olds, frontline workers, and vulnerable people by mid-February.

There are now 50% more patients with the disease in hospital than there were at the peak of the first wave last spring.

Under the lockdown restrictions, both primary and secondary schools will not open their doors until mid-February, except for the vulnerable and children of key workers who can not work from home.

Addressing the closure of schools, the PM said "we did everything in our power to keep them open as long as possible" and that was why schools were the "very last thing to close".

Education Select Committee chairman Robert Halfon told Sky News the situation regarding schools was "a mess".

"This has got to stop".

But Mr Johnson confirmed that just 10% of care home residents had received a vaccine, along with 14% of staff.

Mr Williamson said students would be graded based on teacher assessments instead.

Johnson ordered the national lockdown in England after public health officials warned that the rising infection rates threatened to overwhelm the National Health Service.

The House of Commons was recalled from its Christmas recess to debate and retrospectively voted on the lockdown which has already been in force since it was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson Monday evening.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggested 1.1 million people in private households in England had Covid-19 between December 27 and January 2.

The UK is using both the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and one made by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

Amid all this, Britain began its third COVID-19 lockdown on Tuesday with citizens under orders to stay at home and the government calling for one last major national effort to stem the virus before mass vaccinations turn the tide.

Johnson said more than 1.3 million people had been vaccinated as of Tuesday afternoon, adding that almost 1 000 vaccination sites would be ready by the end of the week.

She told the BBC: "I think it will really depend on the epidemiology of the virus... we will have to look at it by year, age group by age group, as happened the first time round, and the final decisions will lay with Government over when they want to bring the students back".

Although Johnson requested people to get the vaccine when it was offered to them, some people have already denied the chance to get their first dose.
