US Capitol police officer dies from injuries suffered during pro-Trump riot”

Gary Peters, who is in line to become the panel's chairman under Democratic control.

The officers observed a moment of silence around midnight to honor Officer Brian D. Sicknick, the fourth member of the force to die since it was founded almost 200 years ago, and the fifth death stemming from the riot.

Contee III confirmed that a person was shot inside the U.S. Capitol Wednesday afternoon. "May it be a comfort to Officer Sicknick's family that so many mourn with and pray for them at this sad time".

Meanwhile, the violent siege of the Capitol by President Donald Trump's supporters forced painful new questions across government Thursday - about his fitness to remain in office for two more weeks, the ability of the police to secure the complex and the future of the Republican Party in a post-Trump era.

Several people died during the insurrection.

Earlier today, the police department denied reports a police officer had died, saying some officers were hospitalised but "none has passed away".

Three other people - two men and a woman - who were on the Capitol grounds died as a result of unspecified "medical emergencies", Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said.

Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Wednesday as Congress was tallying the Electoral College votes to confirm Democrat Joe Biden won the election.

U.S. Capitol Police Hazardous Materials Response Team "determined that both devices were, in fact, hazardous and could cause great harm to public safety", Steven Sund, chief of Capitol Police, said in a statement Thursday.

"The sacrifice of Officer Sicknick reminds us of our obligation to those we serve: to protect our country from all threats foreign and domestic", Pelosi said in a statement.

Washington, D.C., police said Thursday that 68 people were arrested, while Capitol police said they arrested 14, most for unlawful entry.

Chief Sund had resisted calls to step down, with a spokesperson saying earlier that he meant to stay in his position. Sund, along with House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving and Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger have all announced their resignations.

Asked specifically about Trump's remarks, Sherwin said, "We are looking at all actors here, and anyone that had a role, if the evidence fits the element of a crime, they're going to be charged". "It is our duty as bipartisan leaders of the Senate committees with jurisdiction over homeland security, oversight and Capitol operations to examine the security failures that led to Wednesday's attack".
