Woman reportedly fatally mauled by shark in New Zealand”

A video of great white shark swimming near Waihi Beach last February is attracting renewed attention in the wake of the tragic news that a swimmer may have died from a suspected shark attack at the beach on Thursday.

It comes less than two days after Kaelah Marlow died after being attacked by a shark at Waihī Beach.

Though there has been a recorded instance of a shark attack in 2018, this is the first death from shark attack since 2013, when a 47-year old- man was fatally attacked at a beach near the city of Auckland.

"Emergency services were called at about 5.10 p.m. after reports of a woman being injured in the water".

"We appreciate her death was extremely traumatic for those who were at Waihi Beach yesterday and we are offering victim support services to anyone who requires it", the statement said.

"She got separated from all her friends and was pulled really far out, beyond where the surfers would sit".

A small group gather on Waihī Beach following a fatal shark attack on Thursday. The victim had severe bite wounds, in one of her legs. Police have referred the case to the coroner.

When they heard screams, lifeguards went out by boat immediately and pulled her to shore.

"We were in the water at the same time as the girl and her friends. they were about five metres in front of us, but they kept getting further and further out", Gould said.

"I didn't see any blood - she was alive and when they got to shore, they started CPR straight away".

While other locals said it was not unusual for sharks to be seen in the shallow waters at the beach, they are usually not harmful to swimmers.

None were believed to be particularly large, she said.

"It was shocking, surreal, and we were all a bit freaked keeps playing on my mind".
