Bill Belichick Rejects Donald Trump's Presidential Medal Of Freedom”

Bill Belichick received mostly praise on social media for his decision to reject President Trump's offer to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest civilian honor in the U.S.

Belichick continued, "Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation's values, freedom and democracy".

However, he said that after last week's insurrection at the United States Capitol Building that he decided against accepting the award.

He said he represents his team and his family, and he referred to the NFL's controversy about racial justice in the past year.

"This president has made a mockery of the Presidential Medal of Freedom", McGovern said.

Belichick learned of the honor prior to the attack on the Capitol, according to profootballtalk.com. "But on the Thursday of the week in which Donald Trump is going to be impeached, that is not the right day to be accepting a Medal of Freedom award".

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has had a long friendship with outgoing US President Donald Trump. The Bill Belichick Foundation also provides scholarship and grant funds to help underprivileged youth participate in sports programs.

Although he describes himself as apolitical, Belichick wrote Trump a letter during the 2016 presidential campaign that the candidate read aloud at a rally in the days before the election. Belichick and Trump have both stated that they are good friends with each other. He has led the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, joining George Halas and Curly Lambeau as the only coaches with six championships since the league began postseason play in 1933.

Citing scheduling conflicts, the club did not visit the White House following their win in Super Bowl LIII following the 2018 season.

Belichick, who grew up in the shadow of Washington, D.C., in Annapolis, Md., where his father was a legendary assistant football coach and scout at the Naval Academy, has been mentioned before by the nation's leaders. "I think our team did a great job of that", Belichick said.
