Here's what Cowboys add in defensive coordinator Dan Quinn”

The Dallas Cowboys agreed to terms Monday with former Atlanta coach Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator, turning over a unit that was among the worst in franchise history to someone who built his reputation on defense in Seattle. But before he became the head man in Atlanta, Quinn was the defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, which was when Seattle made back-to-back Super Bowls. He was sacked in October after a Week 5 loss dropped the Falcons to 0-5.

The Dallas Cowboys fired Mike Nolan as their defensive coordinator after just one season and they didn't waste time finding his replacement.

The 50-year-old last served as Atlanta's head coach but was sacked after a 0-5 start to the 2020 season. In two years as defensive coordinator for the Seahawks, Quinn's defense ranked No. 1 in yards and points allowed both seasons. He also worked as a defensive line coach. The 2021 goal appears to be returning to a more basic scheme. His top priority will be fixing a run defense that nearly gave up 300 yards on the ground in a game twice.

In 2020 Nolan installed a more multiple scheme than the 4-3 system that Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard ran in previous years for Dallas. Quinn, who was sacked from the Falcons during the 2020 season, is one of three known candidates who is being considered for the job.

During his two years in Seattle, Quinn directed one of the most accomplished defenses in National Football League history.

As the Falcons head coach, Quinn led the team to Super Bowl LI in the 2016 season.

The Cowboys reportedly had virtual interviews with Falcons secondary coach/passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and Carolina Panthers defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach Jason Simmons. "With the change in coaching, and if you will, especially on the defensive side of the line, if you will, a change in technique, a change in some philosophy there".
