Schumacher's son joins Haas for first F1 drive next season

Schumacher's son joins Haas for first F1 drive next season”

MICK SCHUMACHER said he is overwhelmed to follow in his father's footsteps and realise his childhood dream by racing in Formula One. "I also want to acknowledge and extend my love to my parents â€" I know that I owe them everything.

Schumacher who now leads the Formula 2 standings heading into final round will join the Haas squad as part of an all-new driver line-up for next season.

How has Mick Schumacher handled the inevitable pressure of being the son of the seven-time champion, and is he prepared for how that will go up next year?

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner said, "I'm very pleased that we're able to confirm Mick Schumacher in our driver line-up for next season and I look forward to welcoming him into the team".

"The F2 Championship has long served as a proving ground for talent to showcase their credentials", said Haas team boss Gunther Steiner.

Schumacher is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, and his signing by Haas represents a new stage in the relationship between the team and Maranello, which had not previously extended to driver decisions. A huge thank you must also go to all the great motorsport fans out there who have supported me throughout my career.

A dramatic turnaround in form midway through the 2018 F3 season saw Schumacher win multiple races, raising eyebrows and leading Ticktum to accuse Prema of cheating, arguing Schumacher had an unfair advantage because of his name.

He was placed in an induced coma until 2014 before moving his family to Gland, Switzerland, where he is continuing his rehabilitation, though has not been seen in public since.

But the attention on him has been intense since he came more into the public eye, starting with a demonstration drive in his father's 1994 title-winning F1 vehicle at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2017. Nevertheless I think it's something I've been able to get used to and I would say about myself that I'm able to deal with it pretty well.

"I think the result speak for it".

"It's awesome to be racing the same sport", Schumacher said. 'It is a sport we both love so much, so to be able to go a similar path and get to know the sport inside out is awesome.

"To finally reach my goal and to be one of those 20 drivers is something incredible. I will do the same as usual and try to keep the same rhythm that I have".

"Primarily it's because 4 and 7 are two numbers I really like", said Schumacher.

The young German is now leading the Formula 2 Championship and looks to be the likely victor at the end of the two races at Bahrain this weekend.

He failed to make an immediate impression against a field of more experienced drivers, but secured his first win in the sprint race at the Hungaroring - a track his father won four Hungarian Grands Prix at.
