Sofia Kenin rallies past Yulia Putintseva to reach Abu Dhabi quarterfinals”

The defending Australian Open champion defeated 13th-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

"I practice with her (Putintseva) quite a bit, and I know her game well, and she knows my game pretty well", Kenin said during her post-match press conference.

Sakkari defeated fifth-seeded Garbine Muguruza, the former Wimbledon and Roland Garros victor, 7-5, 6-4. "It was not me on the court", Gasanova told reporters amid continuous giggles.

Svitolina twice came back from a break down in the deciding set, including when Kudermetova served for the match at 6-5, but trailed 3-0 in the tiebreak and couldn't recover. However, any turnaround Pliskova hoped to execute at that juncture was thwarted when Gasanova used more stellar returning to reclaim her break lead and go up 5-4.

The day's final victor, Veronika Kudermetova, will play Svitolina in the quarterfinals.

Russian qualifier Anastasia Gasanova pulled off the biggest upset of the 2021 season thus far, as the 292nd-ranked player in the world shocked former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the round of 16 at the Abu Dhabi WTA Women's Tennis Open. "I'm really surprised, but when I woke up today, I thought, 'Why not?"

"I didn't give her any time to play, to make her trick shots", Sabalenka said. The Ukrainian player let her opponent win only two games in two sets.

For her quarterfinal opponent, Sakkari awaits the victor of the following match on Centre Court, between No.1 seed Sofia Kenin of the United States and No.13 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Sakkari will next face fourth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, who won her 13th straight match by beating Elena Rybakina 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Gasanova will next play Spain's 66th ranked Sara Sorribes Tormo in the last 16.
