AZ seeks European Union approval for its Oxford University-partnered COVID-19 vaccine”

The Amsterdam-based regulator said that its assessment of the vaccine would "proceed under an accelerated timeline".

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) did not provide details on which documents or data were made available online, but said necessary action was being taken by law enforcement authorities.

A conditional marketing authorisation results in a fast-tracked approval during public health emergencies valid throughout all European Union member states.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports The Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology (ASI) point to a recent study, which found the AstraZeneca vaccine to be 62% effective in preventing someone from contracting COVID-19.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the development "good news" in a tweet.

Meanwhile the European Commission plans to conclude this week preliminary talks with French company Valneva over the advance purchase of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, EU top negotiator Sandra Gallina told lawmakers on Tuesday.

Speaking on The Today Show Wednesday morning, Australia's Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paul Kelly, said all of this discussion shouldn't impact trust in vaccine safety. Besides, the vaccine was approved for use in Belarus.

AstraZeneca's vaccine has been approved in countries including Argentina, Britain, El Salvador and India.

The Department of Health says Australia has secured 53.8 million doses of the vaccine, which is delivered in two shots.

The update comes a month after both Pfizer and BioNTech, and later Moderna, said the EMA had informed the companies that some evaluation documents had been accessed in the cyberattack on the agency.
