Chinese city tests millions amid fresh virusoutbreak

Chinese city tests millions amid fresh virusoutbreak”

The curbs come ahead of February's Lunar New Year, when hundreds of millions criss-cross China to visit family and friends, and authorities are anxious to contain the spread of the virus before the massive annual migration. The Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University sent a vehicle-carried mobile CT scanner to Hebei.

"We have to be careful as we're near Guan, where COVID cases were reported today", said a volunteer security officer surnamed Wang, referring to a Hebei province county bordering Beijing. "The county reported the 1st #COVID19 case on Jan 2 during this round of flare-ups in Hebei", tweeted Global Times.

The National Health Commission reported 55 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, down from 103 a day earlier.

Of the locally transmitted cases, 90 were reported in north China's Hebei Province, 16 in Heilongjiang Province and one in Shanxi Province, the commission said in its daily report. Many provinces have issued notices urging workers to stay put for the festival.

China has rejected calls for an independent investigation while strictly controlling all research into the origins of the coronavirus and promoting fringe theories that the virus may have actually been brought to China from outside.

The city of Langfang in Hebei on Tuesday said its 4.9 million residents will be put under home quarantine for seven days and be subject to mass COVID-10 testing in the latest attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Suihua city in Heilongjiang - home to more than 5.2 million - was sealed off on Monday after reporting one confirmed case and 45 asymptomatic cases. The province has shut off certain sections of highways and is ordering vehicles registered to Shijiazhuang to turn back.

As of January 9, China had administered more than 9 million vaccine doses. In last week, the city reported 369 confirmed COVID-19 cases and asymptomatic cases, all of whom are treated at designated hospitals.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland reached 87,706 by Tuesday, including 784 patients still receiving treatment, 21 of whom were in severe condition.

Heilongjiang province reported 36 new asymptomatic cases in Wangkui county, which also went into lockdown on Monday.

Chinese health experts warned that the coronavirus spreading in China appears to be more infectious and transmissible, and asymptomatic infections, especially silent infections in villages, have become a new and big challenge for China, judging from the ongoing Shijiazhuang outbreak, reported Global Times. The last time the Chinese mainland reported such a rise was at the end of July, when Urumqi, Xinjiang was hit by daily new cases of over 100, reported Global Times.
