Coronavirus: 604 new cases in Galway & 46 deaths reported today”

The new United Kingdom variant of the disease is now accounting for approximately 45% of all new cases identified in Ireland.

The hospital is now treating double the number of coronavirus patients it dealt with in the first wave of the pandemic, as Ireland's national 14-day incidence rate reaches 1291.2. The national average is 1410.3.

Professor Philip Nolan said "We are seeing numbers of cases per day, and numbers in hospitals that we could not have comprehended prior to Christmas".

Eight additional coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the Republic of Ireland, with its total now 2,344.

Ireland's COVID-19 modelling chief said on Monday current projections showed the number of people in intensive care units rising to between 200 and 400 in the coming weeks.

Ireland has the world's highest incidence of confirmed new cases per million people.

Ireland's health service, test and trace scheme and public hospitals are under huge strain with the sheer volume of people being confirmed to have the disease, and younger, healthier people becoming ill with the virus, some requiring hospitalisation.

Northern Ireland's six health trusts say the number of people with Covid-19 in hospital will double by the third week of January. 128 additional hospitalisations have been seen over the past 24 hours.

Chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said we are seeing "the first glimmer of hope in respect of our daily case figures and positivity rates" but warned that the situation in hospitals and ICUs around the country continues to worsen day on day. Ten of the people diagnosed with the disease at the hospital are in ICU.

Dr Ronan Glynn, deputy chief medical officer, said at least one in three patients admitted to hospital or critical care this month have been under the age of 65. This clearly demonstrates that Covid affects us all, regardless of age or underlying condition.

"This will only continue if every one of us is committed to following the public health advice to stay at home and work from home as much as possible". "Not only will you keep yourself and your loved ones safe, but also help avoid more preventable Covid admissions to our now struggling healthcare system".
