Ontario health officials reported 2,903 new COVID cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of active cases across the province to 29,478.

The province's state of emergency will last 28 days, at which point officials will assess its effectiveness.

Pressure has been mounting on the government to do more to help essential workers with symptoms, but also rent to pay and groceries to buy. Before the legislature adjourned in December, the OFL urged all-party support of the "Stay Home If You Are Sick Act", a Private Members Bill introduced by MPP Peggy Sattler.

Tuesday's case count brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Ontario to 222,023, including deaths and recoveries.

All businesses are ordered to make sure any employee who can work from home, does work from home.

As of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 133,553 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ontario, including 11,448 doses administered in the past 24 hours. There are now over 400 patients with COVID-19 in ICU beds throughout the province.

"If we don't move fast, our hospital ICUs could be overwhelmed by the beginning of February", he said.

Elliott says that more than 50,900 tests were completed since the last daily report.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said the measures announced aren't dramatically different than what the government has already been asking people to do for weeks.

The restricted hours do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores and restaurants open for takeout or delivery.

"We'll be going to cabinet with recommendations".

"The past nine months of this pandemic has been really jarring for us because everything we had known or what we did in our daily lives, all of it was gone", Ellison said. In Canada, about five per cent of positive COVID-19 samples are being genetically sequenced to look for mutations.

Effective Jan. 14 at 12:01 a.m., a stay-at-home order is being issued province-wide, requiring everyone to stay home with exceptions for essential purposes. This includes parks or houses.

The government also said schools in five hot spot regions - Toronto, Hamilton, Peel, York and Windsor-Essex - will not reopen for in-person learning until February 10.

Before- and after-school programs can be offered when in-person instruction resumes. Schools in northern PHUs will continue to remain open.

Additionally, the government will implement new health and safety measures across the province in child care settings, including enhanced screening to align with school requirements, voluntary participation in targeted testing and additional infection prevention and control measures to align with schools.

Watson explained that because the province left it up to the individual school board's discretion, each board may differ when choosing what level of disability a child needs to have to be allowed back - meaning a child could go back to the classroom in one board but not another.

So far, students in Durham Region will still be heading back to school for in-person learning on January 25. Surgeries are being cancelled and the access to care deficit will continue to increase with real consequences for health.
