Pelosi says House will impeach Trump, pushes VP to oust him”

"This resolution calls on the Vice President to convene and mobilise the Cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment to declare the President incapable of executing the duties of his office, after which the Vice President would immediately exercise powers as acting President".

"This is urgent. This president represents a real danger to our democracy", he told reporters.

The move against Trump, who has already been impeached by the Democratic-controlled House once before, comes as he has just 10 days left on his presidential mandate.

Mr Trump and his allies spoke at a "stop the steal" rally hours before supporters stormed Washington DC's Capitol building, branded "incitement to insurrection" in the article for impeachment.

A violent mob of Trump supporters overpowered police, broke through security lines and windows, and rampaged through the Capitol, forcing lawmakers to scatter as they were finalising Biden's victory over Trump in the Electoral College. "He is a clear and present danger to American democracy and the national security of the United States".

The bill from Reps. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Ted Lieu of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Jerrold Nadler of NY, said Trump threatened "the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power" and "betrayed" trust.

A few Republicans have joined calls for Trump to resign, but the president has given no sign he's contemplating it. During the call, Trump reportedly asked Raffensperger to "find" more than 11,000 votes, in an alleged attempt to overturn the election results that saw Democrat Joe Biden's win in Georgia.

Trump's term ends in eight days, with Biden taking office January 20, but some lawmakers on both sides are adamant about removing Trump from office now, warning he is a threat to America.

The shocking actions taken by Trump supporters last week followed months of false claims Mr Biden and Democrats had "stolen" the November election. Judges across the country, including some nominated by Trump, repeatedly dismissed cases and Attorney General William Barr, a Trump ally, said there was no sign of any widespread fraud.

"The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified and so is the immediate need for action".

"I expect we will have Republican support", he said.

Pence has given no indication he would act on the 25th Amendment. "I don't think he is electable in any way". That would give the new president time to get cabinet members confirmed and focus on legislative priorities.

"Let's give president-elect Biden the 100 days he needs to get his agenda off and running".

Still, some Republicans might be supportive.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse said he would take a look at any articles that the House sent over.

The article of impeachment for an "incitement of insurrection" was introduced by Democratic Reps. He said last week that impeachment is a matter for Congress to decide, but he also said his inauguration would be the quickest way to get Trump out of office. No president has been impeached twice.

Support from Trump is waning even within his own Republican Party, though it is thought that no Congress Republicans would support impeachment.
