United States vs. Billie Holiday Trailer Highlights Racial Inequality”

The United States vs Billie Holiday is directed by Lee Daniels, and tells the story of how Holiday rose to prominence through her powerful music and then her decision to write politically charged tracks such as the anti-lynching song odd fruit that set her on a collision course with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Andra Day, who stars as Holiday, saw her own breakthrough in recent years thanks to her 2015 debut studio album Cheers to the Fall and its hit single "Rise Up".

The upcoming movie, will premier on Hulu and centers on Billie's life when she was the target of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as they attempted to derail her career. The song famously confronts the lynchings and killings of Black people in the United States. The song went on to earn Day The Soul Train Ashford & Simpson Songwriting award and Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album and Best Performance.

"It's a song about important things, you know?"

The trailer has given LGBT+ fans hope that Holiday's queerness will be explored in the film.

The film was scheduled for theatrical release towards the end of 2020 but was picked up by Hulu instead and releasing on February 26th, 2021. However, the real reason was the true stories behind her songs, including "Strange Fruit". "When you think of Billie Holiday, you think of this brilliant tortured jazz singer that happened to have been a drug addict. That's history and they keep it from us".

Lee said of casting Andra in the role, which is her first on-screen role ever, that many wanted him to cast Andra, but he says, "I don't like being pressured into anything". Lady Sings the Blues, released in 1972, famously starred Diana Ross as the famous jazz singer - however, that version did not explore Holiday's relationships with women.
