Bird flu: Mumbai civic body issues guidelines

Bird flu: Mumbai civic body issues guidelines”

The order issued by the veterinary services department of the NDMC also said that owners of restaurants and hotels will face action if egg-based dishes or poultry meat and other products are served to customers.

Mumbai's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a set of guidelines on Monday in light of samples of two crows from Mumbai testing positive for bird flu.

"The samples taken from poultry markets have tested negative for bird flu".

Mayor further said that "We are going to instruct ward public health inspectors to visit restaurants selling roasted chicken and request them not to sell it until the problem of bird flu is over in Delhi". Chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys are among the poultry birds bred by farmers for their eggs and meat.

Hours after officials confirmed that 100 samples taken from Asia's largest poultry market in Ghazipur tested negative, Delhi government on Thursday lifted ban on sale and import of poultry products in the region. He had also said that eggs are safe to eat.

The Delhi Development Authority had also closed Hauz Khas Park, Dwarka Sector 9 Park, Hastsal Park and Sanjay Lake as a precautionary measure.

With consumers refusing to bite into chicken from open markets due to the bird flu scare, top hatcheries across India have witnessed a 15-25% impact on sales, while online retailers said there has been no significant dent in business due to the hygiene protocols they maintain.

While the avian influenza, also known as H5N1, poses no apparent threat to humans, its highly pathogenic strains can be deadly to domestic poultry and sometimes, wild birds.

The New Delhi Municipal Council, which constitutes almost five per cent of Delhi areas, however, has not issued any official order on the ban, but said they are following the directions issued by the Delhi government with respect to bird flu. Since January 6, prices of broiler chicken have crashed from around Rs 82 to Rs 58 per kg in Maharashtra, Rs 94 to Rs 65 in Gujarat, and Rs 80 to Rs 70 in Tamil Nadu.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying has urged unaffected states to be on alert for unusual deaths among birds to contain the spread of the infection.

To deal with the situation the states were asked to coordinate with the department of health and forest and sensitize them about the issue, the ministry said. The situation is being monitored strictly and samples are being collected regularly, he said. It added that surveillance should be extended to all wetlands and habitats that host migratory birds and areas with any possibility of interaction of migratory and poultry birds.
