Covid symptoms stay even after 6 months

Covid symptoms stay even after 6 months”

According to a recent study in The Lancet journal, many Covid positive patients admitted in hospital for treatment have at least one existing symptom after six months of becoming infected with the virus.

"Imbalance in the microbiome contributes to the severity of COVID-19, and if it persists after viral clearance, could contribute to persistent symptoms and multi-system inflammation syndromes like long COVID syndrome", said lead researcher Dr. Siew Ng, a professor from the Institute of Digestive Disease at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The patients in the new report were discharged from Jin Yin-tan Hospital in Wuhan between January and May of 2020. For the study, patients were interviewed face to face to evaluate their post COVID symptoms and quality of life after the illness. The discharged patients also went through some physical examinations, lab tests and a six-minute walking test to scale their tolerance levels. "Patients who were more severely ill during their hospital stay had more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, and are the main target population for intervention of long-term recovery", the study said.

For patients who required supplemental oxygen therapy and those who did not require oxygen therapy, the researchers said the figures were 29% and 22%, respectively.

As for dealing with anxiety or depression, which was reported among 23 percent of patients in the study, Huang suggested psychological therapy including counseling, as these mental issues may be the result of the neurological effects of the disease as well as societal misunderstanding and stigmatization.

Of 94 patients with blood antibodies tested at follow-up, the seropositivity (96.2% versus 58.5%) and median titres (19.0 versus 10.0) of the neutralizing antibodies were significantly lower compared with at the acute phase. Researchers began in-person follow-up visits with this group after an average of 186 days post-hospitalization.

"Because COVID-19 is such a new disease, we are only beginning to understand some of its long-term effects on patients' health". The medium time of the patients' recovery since they had shown infections is roughly six months.

According to the study, 41 per cent of the 390 patients tested for lung function experienced reduced lung function.

Funding for this research was provided by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the National Key Research and Development Program of China and others. Editorial writer Giussepe Remuzzi reported receiving personal fees and non-financial support from Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc, Janssen Pharmaceutical, Akebia Therapeutics, Alnylam, Boehringer Ingelheim, Inception Sciences Canada, Omeros, and Catalyst Biosciences, all outside of the submitted work.
