Wikwemikong Nursing Home residents, staff among first in northeastern Ont

Wikwemikong Nursing Home residents, staff among first in northeastern Ont”

"We had managed to keep Covid-19 out of all five of our nursing homes for the entirety of a year ago and we were looking forward to the schedule of vaccinations commencing next week". A further six people are classed as not-detected / negative.

Residents and staff at Wikwemikong Nursing Home on Manitoulin Island will be the first in the Sudbury district to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

In addition to this, 33 staff members have also contracted the virus. In fact, two of our nursing homes are being vaccinated this week and Dromineen was supposed to be vaccinated on January 19.

Speaking to RTE's Morning Ireland, Gearoid Brennan, CEO of Brookhaven Health Group, said that the deaths at Droimnin Nursing Home have "devastated" the local community.

He explained that residents who have not tested positive for the virus have now been separated from the infected cohort. It said it is working with nursing homes targeted for vaccination and plans must be flexible to accommodate unforeseen events, which may be operational or as a result of outbreaks of any contagious illness.

'It is a huge loss, ' Mr Brennan said. For the entire community of Stradbally it has been a devastating blow.

"We have accommodation on-site for staff and we are extremely grateful for them not going back to the community to their families during this critical period to ensure the additional protection of our residents at this time".

He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest sympathies, from everyone in Droimnín Nursing Home, to the families of those residents".

Chief and Council of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory report that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccination will be made available this week for the Wikwemikong Nursing Home.

Mr Brennan explained that some staff members are now living on the nursing home's grounds to ensure that they do not have to reenter the community.

Staff members are now living on the grounds of the Laois nursing home to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. "As well as working so hard during this virus outbreak, the staff have the heartbreak of seeing the residents they cared for dying in such difficult circumstances".

This is the first outbreak of COVID-19 in the Laois nursing home.

The Brookhaven Healthcare Group runs for other nursing homes.
