Fifty-one more people have died as a result of COVID-19 as the province reports 3,056 new cases of the virus on Saturday.

Patients hospitalized with the virus decreased slightly on Saturday as the province's health care system remains overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases.

A total of 5,340 people with COVID-19 have died in Ontario during the pandemic. Meanwhile another 3,380 people have made a full recovery, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 197,194.

Where were Ontario's new COVID-19 cases found?

Ontario health officials say 73,875 COVID-19 tests were performed across Ontario on Friday and 50,387 remain under investigation.

The testing positivity rate now stands at 4.9 per cent, up from 4.6 per cent a day ago, according to the Ministry of Health.

Health officials reported that 1,632 people are now in hospital due to the disease.

"Locally, there are 903 new cases in Toronto, 639 in Peel, 283 in York Region, 162 in Durham and 152 in Ottawa", Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted. Of those patients, more than 397 are in intensive care, and 281 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator. More than 200,000 Ontarians who have contracted COVID-19 are now being reported as having recovered.

The province completed 76,472 tests yesterday.

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ottawa reported by the province Saturday is an increase from the previous days.

Earlier this week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared a second state of emergency and issued a stay-at-home order for the province, which started on Thursday.

There were 14,460 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on January 15, down from 15,609 on January 143.
