Philip Rivers retiring from National Football League after 17 seasons

Philip Rivers retiring from National Football League after 17 seasons”

Philip Rivers announced today that his 17th National Football League season was indeed his last.

In the Vikings tradition of Warren Moon (signed in 1994), Randall Cunningham (incredible season in 1998) and of course Brett Favre (2009), Rivers would have been that accomplished veteran looking for one more chance at glory with a new team.

He ends his career fifth all-time in completions (5,277), passing yards (63,440), and passing touchdowns (421). "He throws it the same way and anytime I try to tell him, he says, 'Dad, you throw it that way.' So I've left him alone also".

Rivers said that he'd considered retirement in recent years, but that "this is the first year I felt like the ending was real". I love to play.' But that's always going to be there.

When Philip Rivers first started tossing footballs as a high-school ball boy, he heaved them any way he could.

Last summer, he accepted the head coaching job at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, where he hopes to coach his sons - just like his father coached him.

"If Philip Rivers is a Hall of Famer, then, evidently, all it means in the modern era to be a Hall of Famer is just be, you know, somewhere around a top-10 quarterback, and you'll make the Hall of Fame".

The Vikings of course had Kirk Cousins - a QB who, it should be known, is on a similar career arc to Rivers and who has spoke admiringly of Rivers in the past. "I got to do it". Even after the Chargers moved to Los Angeles in 2017, Rivers commuted to practice and home games from his home in North County. "Not because I didn't like it".

"Every year, January 20 is a special and emotional day", Rivers' statement read. I appreciate the referees for putting up with all my fussing.

"If (the future) is here, in Indy playing another year then we'll be here", Rivers said following the season finale.

Despite his regular-season success, including a 134-106 lifetime record and just four seasons below.500, Rivers made it as far as the AFC Championship only once in his career, back in 2007.

What Rivers sees as divine direction came in the form of a trade that sent Eli Manning to the New York Giants after the Chargers had selected him first overall. This year felt different.
