COVID-19 vaccine doses may be spaced six weeks apart, CDC says

COVID-19 vaccine doses may be spaced six weeks apart, CDC says”

As of January 10, a reported 40,41,396 first doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine had been administered in the U.S., and reports of 1,266 adverse events after receipt of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine were submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, according to the CDC.

The deal is a boost to the global program known as COVAX, as wealthy nations have snapped up most of the millions of coming shots.

The guidance posted in a January 21 update to the CDC website said a second dose should be administered as close to the recommended schedule as possible, either three weeks for the Pfizer Inc.

A report released earlier this month from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization says that while it is ideal to follow the vaccine manufacturers' recommendations, people can wait longer - 42 days or so - for the second dose.

The global program previously secured access to almost 2 billion doses of vaccines from five other vaccine producers, plus options on a billion doses more.

The vaccine from BioNTech and U.S. partner Pfizer was initially sold in the European Union in vials meant to deliver five doses, but a global shortage of shots and a viability assessment on dosage convinced the European Union drugs regulator to approve on January 8 the extraction of six doses from the same vials.

New York-based Pfizer Inc. had not previously committed to providing its COVID-19 vaccine to poor countries without making a profit during the pandemic, as a couple rivals have. The companies still must execute a supply agreement covering distribution, but the doses are to be delivered throughout 2021, starting by the end of March.

"The commitment of the (United States) to join COVAX, together with this new agreement with Pfizer/BioNTech, mean that we are closer to fulfilling the promise of COVAX", he said.

Vaccinations programs are already being rolled out in many parts the world, but mostly in developed countries.

Pfizer and BioNTech said they would also help health systems handle the vaccine, which requires ultracold storage.

COVAX said they hope to distribute around 1.8 billion doses in 2021 to 92 lower-income countries.
