MI health director abruptly resigns, replaced by deputy

MI health director abruptly resigns, replaced by deputy”

As almost 15,000 people have died in Michigan from the coronavirus and the state has gone through a series of closures, openings and reclosures, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released their latest epidemic order.

This new order will be in effect until February 21. All tables must be six feet apart with no more than six people per table. He, Whitmer and medical officials cited soaring rates of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. They will also be required to close by 10 p.m. MDHHS closely monitors three metrics, and all have either stabilized or declined in the past few weeks.

Night clubs will remain closed under the order, as are workplaces if the work can be done at home.

The order also loosens gathering restrictions so two families can go to the movies or bowl together; raises the capacity cutoff at stadiums with more than 10,000 seats to 500, from 250; and authorizes personal-care services where a mask must be removed such as facials.

The MDHHS director, Robert Gordon, also put in a plug for two other related matters: The first is, going out with only members of your own household. "Even so, the science is clear that unmasked, indoor activities like dining and drinking are still a source of high risk around COVID-19".

"The hospitality industry and its sizable workforce has suffered far worse than its peers from this pandemic, losing almost 3,000 restaurants and employing 200,000 fewer workers than a year prior", said Justin Winslow, president and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association, in a statement. The safest course remains to support your favorite restaurant with carryout, delivery or outdoor dining.

Michigan's COVID-19 Safer Dining certification program is voluntary and would certify food service establishments who have their ventilation system inspected and submit that inspection report to the state.

Whitmer said the decision was made due to the stabilized coronavirus numbers in the state, as well as the economic toll the pandemic has taken on the restaurant and hospitality industry.

Republican lawmakers have threatened to reject any gubernatorial appointment until "the economy is safely reopened", Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Stamas of R-Midland said in a statement.
