New UK variant of coronavirus may be more deadly, says Boris Johnson

New UK variant of coronavirus may be more deadly, says Boris Johnson”

Early evidence out of the UK suggests the new UK Covid-19 variant may be more deadly than the original virus.

"It also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant. may be associated with a higher degree of mortality", he said at a Downing Street news conference. The new variant, he said, would kill 13 or 14.

This was a message backed up by the prime minister who said: "We really can't begin to consider unlocking until we're confident that the vaccination programme is working, until we're confident that we don't have new variants or changes in our understanding of the virus".

He, however, stressed that the data is "uncertain", but suggests that for a man in his 60s, the risk of death with the new variant is 13 in 1,000 rather than the original 10 in 1000, making it about 30 per cent more unsafe.

"It is largely the impact of this new variant that means the NHS is under so much intense pressure", he said.

Based on preliminary data briefing by scientists at the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG), Mr. Johnson admitted that it would seem the new variant was deadlier but stressed that the two vaccines being administered in the UK - Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca - are effective against all variants.

The sobering news came as the United Kingdom sees record deaths from Covid-19, following a surge in cases and hospitalisations since the variant was first identified in southeast England in September.

According to Vallance: "The vaccines are being rolled out at an unprecedented pace, we have more vaccines than we could ever have dreamt of a year ago - including ones we can alter as needs be - and we have new medicines coming along, including specific anti-virals".

The average daily death rate has been more than 1,000 for at least a week.

"We don't want to put that [all the effort to control the virus] at risk by having a new variant come back in".

Vallance stressed the variants recently identified in Brazil and South Africa are more worrying because they might be less susceptible to vaccines.

The total number of people in the country who have died within 28 days of a positive test now stands at 95,981. But no difference had been identified yet among hospitalized patients.

The government said the case rates remain "dangerously high" and urged the public to keep to lockdown rules.

Chief Medical Officer for England Chris Whitty said Friday that there were "definite signs of improvement" in both the number of people infected with coronavirus in England and in hospital admission data.
