Severe reaction to Moderna vaccine 'rare': US study”

Pfizer's second dose is meant to be delivered 21 days after the first, while Moderna's has a 28-day wait in between doses.

10, there were 10 cases of anaphylaxis reported among 4.04 million people who received their first doses of Moderna's two-shot vaccine, according to the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Many of those who suffered anaphylaxis after receiving either vaccine had a history of allergies or allergic reactions, and several had an anaphylaxis episode in the past, the CDC said.

However, Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech said they would provide their vaccine to COVAX at an undisclosed "not-for-profit price".

In Covax, funding is covered through donations for the 92 lower- and lower-middle income economies involved, while for richer countries, buying in operates as a back-up insurance policy.

Gavi chief executive Seth Berkley said almost 150 million doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine were ready to ship through Covax - pending emergency use approval from the World Health Organization, which is on course to happen in mid-February. The majority of the 100 million doses are earmarked for delivery in the first quarter of the year.

"By far most importantly, [FDA considered] the need to ensure that the maximum number of individuals were vaccinated in the United States as rapidly as possible, since using 6 doses from the vials will vaccinate 16.6 percent more Americans than 5 doses would", a spokesperson said.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the new agreement with Pfizer should allow vaccinations to begin in February for health workers, although details of supply arrangements are still being finalized.

The World Health Organization said Friday it has signed a purchase agreement for up to 40 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc.as part of its initiative to provide global equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.

The deal is a boost to the global program known as COVAX, as wealthy nations have snapped up most of the millions of coming shots.
