Ferrari appoints first female racer to Driver Academy

Ferrari appoints first female racer to Driver Academy”

For the first time, Ferrari has included a woman in the Formula One team's drivers "academy, with 16-year-old Dutch Go-Carter Maya Weug getting a chance to be part of Formula One's drivers" academy.

Weug beat fellow finaists Doriane Pin of France, who is 17, and Brazilians Antonella Bassani, 14 and Julia Ayoub, 15.

"My warmest congratulations to the Dutch/Belgian driver Maya Weug", said Jean Todt, president of the FIA. She is the victor of the FIA's Inaugural Girls on Track - Rising Stars program, organized by the Coordinating Committee of the Ferrari Driver Academy and the Motorsport Commission. At just 16 years old she has already had a lot of success in national and worldwide karting.

Describing Weug's appointment as "a key moment in the history of Scuderia Ferrari and its Academy", team principal Mattia Binotto added: "Maya's arrival is a clear indication of the Scuderia's commitment to making motorsport increasingly inclusive, in line with the hashtag supported by the entire Formula 1 community, #weraceasone". I also congratulate the other three finalists for reaching the final selection.

"I would like to thank the Ferrari Driver Academy and all our partners who have joined us in embracing such an innovative and positive initiative".

Ferrari has outlined that entries are open for the second "Girls on Track - Rising Stars" challenge, which aims to introduce another female into the academy.

The next phase of tests led to four girls being cut, before a shootout in Formula 4 cars at the Formula 1 French Grand Prix venue left four girls to battle it out at Ferrari's base in Maranello.

Asked whether any of the final candidates had shown signs of potentially following in Leclerc's footsteps, FDA manager Marco Matassa said: "For us, being a driver is within the DNA of a person, no matter if they're male or female". This is my first season in F4, so I want to improve myself in every race. In addition to a spot in Ferrari's training program, she will also receive a spot in the 2021 Formula 4 championship.

The three losing finalists will each be given a test in a Ferrari Challenge GT auto, while the FDA will continue to monitor their progress to ensure they are not forgotten.
