Tom Brokaw retiring from NBC News after 55 years”

After giving way at "Nightly News" to Brian Williams in 2004, Brokaw concentrated primarily on historical programming and commentary during big moments, like elections.

"NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw delivers his closing remarks during his final broadcast, in NY on December 1, 2004.

Legendary NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw announced his retirement on Friday, closing the curtain on his half-century-long career chronicling some of the most tumultuous times in USA history.

Brokaw announced his retirement in a statement today (January 22) in which he said, "During one of the most complex and consequential eras in American history, a new generation of NBC News journalists, producers and technicians is providing America with timely, insightful and critically important information, 24/7".

"For me, it's been an fantastic journey - 57 years as a reporter", Brokaw said. He began his NBC career at the Los Angeles bureau of the network, where he covered Ronald Reagan's gubernatorial campaign and the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. In 2008, following the untimely death of Tim Russert, Brokaw stepped in as the temporary moderator of Meet the Press. He was White House correspondent from 1972-1976 and hosted Today from 1976-1983.

Brokaw, who is 80, said he'll continue writing books and articles.

For over 20 years, with his counterparts the late Peter Jennings from ABC News and Dan Rather at CBS, he was part of a trio of national news anchors that most of us grew up watching. Brokaw was also the only American network anchor to report from Berlin the night the Berlin Wall came down in 1989; his reporting earned him The Order of Merit from the German government.

Brokaw, who turns 81 next month, has won a number of significant journalism awards, including Peabodys, Duponts, Emmys and The Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement in Broadcasting.

Since stepping down from NBC Nightly News, Brokaw served as a senior correspondent for NBC News.

President Obama awarded Brokaw the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. In 2013, Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer that affects the bone marrow.
