'Cloverfield' Is Finally Getting a Direct Sequel

'Cloverfield' Is Finally Getting a Direct Sequel”

News of a proper sequel comes almost three years after Abrams confirmed during a panel at 2018 CinemaCon that a "true, dedicated" follow-up in the works to the 2008 hit.

13 years after its release and two spin-offs on, Cloverfield will be getting a direct sequel written by Joe Barton, the new showrunner behind HBO Max's The Batman spin-off centred around the Gotham City Police Department, per The Hollywood Reporter. Unlike the first movie, it won't be a found footage film, but it will be a direct sequel to that film. Plot details are also being kept under wraps, but the film will not be in the found footage style as the original was. One thing we know for sure is that producer, J.J. Abrams, will return hoping to recreate the magic that the original captured.

Among the revelation films of 2008, capable of grossing 172 million against a budget of 25 million thanks to a strong viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield followed a group of boys from NY who tried to cross the city while this was under the attack of a huge monster. Joe Barton, who was just tapped as the showrunner for the upcoming spinoff series of "The Batman", will write the screenplay for the film. Abrams will again produce through Bad Robot, but Reeves will not be involved in the new film. The forged included Lizzy Caplan and T.J. Miller.

Cloverfield was a monster movie and followed a group of 20-something New Yorkers as they try to navigate the city during an attack by a giant monster. The movie made $172 million globally against a $25 million budget. With the release of 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, the banner kicked off a franchise of loosely connected films, which continued with The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018.

Barton's Amazon Studios sci-fi thriller "Invasion" is in post-production, with Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer starring.
