Coronavirus Ireland: 79 further deaths and 1,414 new cases confirmed”

Benefits include that it only requires one dose - as opposed to Moderna and Pfizer's two-dose inoculations - and that it can be stored in a regular refrigerator.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) report published on Saturday, January 30 shows that 11 more people in Laois have contracted the virus.

There was some geographic variation. The overall effectiveness rate for preventing moderate to severe illness was 72% in the US and 66% across all countries studied, the pharmaceutical giant said.

"There's no question that this vaccine is going to be a game-changer", Dr. Mathai Mammen, global head of pharmaceutical research and development for Johnson & Johnson, told CBS News' Dr. Tara Narula.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said one in 10 adults has received their first vaccine dose, with the aim being to vaccinate the top four priority groups by mid-February.

"A one-shot vaccine is considered by the World Health Organization to be the best option in pandemic settings, enhancing access, distribution and compliance".

Janssen, a pharmaceutical company owned by Johnson & Johnson, is also investigating whether giving two doses will give either stronger or longer-lasting protection.

These are preliminary findings from a study of 44,000 volunteers that isn't completed yet.

The U.S. vaccination program got off to a slow start in December and has accelerated to around 1 million shots per day nationwide.

The vaccine also had an impact on Covid variants, notably the South African B.1.351 version. When the vaccinated did become infected, they had a milder illness.

But amid shortages, some countries have advised delaying the second dose of certain vaccines with little data on how that would affect protection. But they're made in very different ways.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines use mRNA to carry the code to make the coronavirus spike protein, which allows the virus to invade human cells.

This is similar to the approach used by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca.

Their efficacy rates, which exceeded 90 percent in clinical trials, were reported prior to growing concerns over what appears to be more contagious variants initially detected in Britain and South Africa. An ongoing U.S. study may provide more information.

Dr Stoffels said: "These topline results with a single-shot COVID-19 vaccine candidate represent a promising moment".

"So we're able to get a lot more immune response than a typical single shot", he said.

While it released few details, the company said there were no serious allergic reactions. Novavax reported this week that its vaccine appears 89% effective in a United Kingdom study and that it also seems to work - though not as well - against new mutated versions of the virus circulating in Britain and South Africa.
