CP NewsAlert: Alberta to ease COVID-19 restrictions on gyms, restaurants, sports”

Those statistics "will be used to guide decisions around the need to pause further relaxations, or potentially to increase restrictions if the virus once again poses a growing threat".

However, Kenney says if cases surge again like we saw in November and December or if one of the variants takes hold and starts to spread at rates seen in other parts of the globe, stronger restrictions will have be imposed again. "Only as we see hospitalizations fall low enough can we consider additional easing of restrictions".

There are now 594 people in the hospital with COVID-19, including 110 in intensive care. "For example, there will be physical distancing requirements, activity restrictions, group size limitations and masking amongst other mandatory measures".

"We must do this in a careful, gradual, stepped approach", Kenney said. "We will continue to use what we have to protect as many Albertans as possible and we will continue to inform Albertans of any changes to our vaccination plans", explained Shandro. "Avoiding that fate is in all of our hands collectively". The measures that we have put in place to fight COVID-19 are unprecedented in Alberta's history.

"Shortly after that, we found out that Alberta would actually receive no vaccines at all in the last week of January".

Hinshaw said there is now no evidence of spread within the broader community of the variants. Dany Fortin, who's in charge of Canada's vaccine distribution, said Pfizer will send just shy of 150,000 doses to Canada over the next two weeks - one-fifth of what was promised.

"Alberta now has the capacity to deliver 50,000 doses per week".

On a positive note, the number of cases in the province continues its downward trend.

There are 591 people in the hospital with 112 of those in ICU.

She reported 14 new deaths Friday.
