Fire at Romanian Covid-19 hospital leaves four dead”

The fire reportedly broke out on the ground floor around 5:00am (0300 GMT), said Orlando Schiopu, head of the inspectorate for emergency situations.

Read Arafat, the emergency department chief, said four victims were all hospital patients.

Three of the victims died in the fire, while the fourth died later, despite the rescuers' efforts to resuscitate her. They were re-located to other COVID-19 hospitals across Bucharest or to other buildings at Matei Bals.

A fire killed five patients at a COVID-19 hospital in the Romanian capital Bucharest on Friday and 102 others were evacuated, officials said, the second deadly hospital fire in the country in under three months.

Even before the pandemic, Romania's health care system had been under pressure, dogged by corruption, inefficiencies and politicized management.

The incident sparked wider safety warnings in a country marked by crumbling infrastructure and a culture of makeshift repairs.

"We can't go on like this". The prime minister's Control Body was also sent to the hospital.

Matei Bals hospital is Romania's main infectious disease facility and has been on the frontline since the coronavirus pandemic started a year ago.

The building where the blaze broke out was built in 1953 and had been completely renovated, its manager said.

The prosecutor general has opened an enquiry into the tragedy, while the health ministry has suggested the fire could have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

During the investigation whose results were released in December previous year, authorities identified nearly 2,000 deficiencies in the fire security systems of ICU units, which are now treating almost a thousand COVID-19 patients.

But local media reported that many patients were still using air heaters and radiators brought by relatives, as the hospital relied on Bucharest's decrepit centralised heating system.

The country has recorded 15,465 cases and 76 deaths, far fewer than Western nations.
