GOP’s Rep. Jim Jordan won’t seek Portman’s US Senate seat

GOP’s Rep. Jim Jordan won’t seek Portman’s US Senate seat”

Given how "red" OH has become and the lack of attractive Democratic candidates, the May Republican primary is considered tantamount to election in the fall.

With Jordan out of the race, several other Ohio Republicans are being mentioned as potential Republican primary candidates for Portman's seat, including Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, Reps. While there were rumors that Jordan could try for the seat, he confirmed on Thursday that he would not be running for Senate. Had Jordan made a decision to run, he could have potentially cleared the GOP field - or set up an early test of Trump's political standing among GOP voters following the Capitol riots. Just some of the possible Republican candidates include J.D. Vance, the author of "Hillbilly Elegy", and Josh Mandel, who dropped out of the 2018 GOP primary race to challenge Democratic Sen.

A GOP source familiar with Ohio politics said that Jane Timken, the chair of the Ohio Republican Party, could get into the Senate race now that Jordan is not running. Pat Tiberi both announced they would not run. Rob Portman, who surprised many this week by saying he won't run to keep it in 2022.

Trump beat President Biden in OH by more than 8 percentage points on November 3, but the state is known for vacillating between parties.

The swashbuckling conservative and former head of the House Republican Freedom Caucus was considered a cinch to have the backing of President Trump's organization in the state and Trump himself.

Jordan, 56, has also been a vocal critic of House lawmakers who voted quickly to impeach Trump this month for inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Jordan, who was first elected to Congress in 2006, was on the fringes of the House GOP conference for much of his tenure in the chamber, particularly given his fraught relationship with former House Speaker John Boehner, a fellow Ohioan.

But Jordan was also one of the most prominent propagators of false and misleading information about the 2020 presidential election, and was among the many House members who objected to the Electoral College results.
