CDC Issues Mask Mandate for Public Transportation and Planes in U.S.”

"Wearing masks on our transportation systems will protect Americans and provide confidence that we can once again travel safely even during this pandemic", the order states.

The CDC has issued an order requiring travelers to wear a mask on public transportation in the US, echoing an executive order by President Joe Biden shortly after he took office.

The order, issued late Friday, will require masks to be worn by "all passengers on public conveyances" traveling into or within the United States, including airplanes, ships, ferries, trains, subways, buses, taxis and ride-shares. It also applies to air terminals, train stations, subway stations, seaports, and bus depots.

The agency said that airlines and other operators must "at the earliest opportunity" remove any passenger who refuses to comply with the mask order.

The order exempts children under 2 years of age and people with a disability that makes it unsafe to wear a mask.

It says, without providing much detail, that enforcement will ultimately be the responsibility of the federal Transportation Security Administration, as well as of "cooperating state and local authorities". Airlines struggled with an exemption for safety and stopped allowing it.

The CDC order covers passengers and transportation operators both during travel and while waiting in transportation hubs.

Passengers may take the mask off to eat, drink or take medications for brief periods, as well as for communication purposes.

New rules just went into effect this week that require all global travelers flying into the United States to have a recent negative COVID-19 test.

The CDC rule came just over a week after Biden's executive order, which already mandated masks on certain modes of public transportation including planes and trains, and it mandated masks on federal property.
