Hyundai Motor : Flying cars airport of the future to land in England”

The Urban Air Port Air-One has been selected as a victor of the United Kingdom government's Future Flight Challenge to develop aviation infrastructure and systems that enable the next generation of electric and autonomous air vehicles.

Jim O'Boyle, Coventry City Council cabinet member for jobs and innovation, said: 'We are already a city that is helping to shape the future of electric transport and this is yet another groundbreaking project that puts Coventry at the forefront of new technologies.

NASA predicts the urban-air mobility sector in the U.S. alone could be worth up to $500 billion (£375bn) in the near-term and suggests that a significant barrier to market growth is the lack of relevant infrastructure.

The city will be part of partnership between the Urban Air Port company, the government, Coventry City Council, and Hyundai Motor Group.

Pamela Cohn, of Hyundai Motor Group, said "development of supporting infrastructure is imperative" for eVTOLs, adding that the carmaker was "excited" to be part of the project.

"Cars need roads. Trains need rails". Over a hundred years ago, the world's first commercial flight took off, creating the modern connected world.

Urban-Air Port was selected by a government programme aimed at developing zero-emission flying and new air vehicles, winning a 1.2-million-pound ($1.65-million) grant to help fund the temporary installation of the airport in Coventry city centre.

The physical footprint of an Urban Air Port is 60 per cent smaller than a traditional heliport (the most comparable existing infrastructure).

Urban Air Port provides an integrated approach to the decarbonisation of cities. Capable of supporting any eVTOL and created to complement other sustainable means of transport, these "mini-airports" have a modular design that allows them to be easily moved to alternative sites as the air-mobility sector develops. The modular design and off-grid power supply enables the Urban Air Port to be built and dismantled quickly to suit changing market needs, or for them to be used to deploy humanitarian aid and disaster relief. "This project epitomises the goal of the Future Flight Challenge fund - it is innovation at its finest - and will help to position the United Kingdom at the vanguard of electric urban air mobility".

A total of 200 sites are planned within the next five years to "meet global demand".

The idea is to demonstrate how future air taxis and cargo drones will integrate with infrastructure that can be installed at multiple points around a city.

After having secured financing for Air-One, Urban Air Port's next objective is to attract more investors to accelerate the commercialization and dissemination of this "mini-airport". The £1.2m of government funding came from Innovate UK's "Future of Flight Challenge".
