Ontario reports 1,848 new COVID cases Sunday”

Ontario labs processed 30,359 test specimens in the past 24 hours, down from 49,352 during the previous period.

She added, "Due to a data catch-up, Toronto Public Health is reporting approximately 300 additional cases".

So, instead of that 1,000 daily new case number, the province will be focusing on getting to below 200 COVID-19 patients in the ICU across the entire province of 14.5 million - something Williams says will take "concerted effort".

Ontario is tightening restrictions for global travellers to try to stop the spread of COVID-19 variants.

Starting from Thursday, all worldwide flights can only land at airports in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and Montreal and all inbound air travellers will be required to stay for three days at a government-designated hotel for the Covid-19 test all at their own cost.

1,273 people are now hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,291 reported yesterday.

There are now a total of 69 B.1.1.7 variant cases in the province.

Locally, there are 713 new cases in Toronto, 379 in Peel, 178 in York Region, 88 in Hamilton, and 55 in Halton. Data shows the variants are more easily transmitted than the common COVID-19 virus but to date, there is no strong evidence it has poorer outcomes.

The testing order comes into effect today at Toronto's Pearson International airport, and will also eventually apply to the province's land border crossings to the United States. The declared provincial emergency and stay-at-home order were recently extended until February 9, 2021.

"And the households of all contacts and symptomatic individuals will be asked to stay home and quarantine until the contact has a negative test", Elliott said. The province is also introducing a provincial antigen screening program for the expansion of rapid testing in high priority settings, such as long-term care homes, retirement homes, essential workplaces, schools and congregate living settings.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,804.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. This will enhance the province's capacity to identify known and emerging variants of COVID-19.
