Tony Bennett reveals he has Alzheimer's”

Tony Bennett has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease but it hasn't quieted his legendary voice.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia in the UK.

In a social media post directing fans to the article, Bennett said: "Life is a gift - even with Alzheimer's".

Alongside a link to the article announcing his diagnosis, he added: "Thank you to (my wife) Susan and my family for their support, and AARP The Magazine for telling my story".

AARP also describes his relationship with Lady Gaga, with whom he released a duet album in 2015. He continues to sing and stay fit on a daily basis.

Alzheimer's is characterized by a progressive memory loss that deprives its sufferers of speech, understanding, treasured memories, recognition of loved ones. According to the article, Bennett has been spared numerous worst characteristics of the disease thus far - wandering from home, episodes of terror, rage or depression - and never develop these symptoms.

Fortunately, Bennett has not experienced some of the worst Alzheimer's symptoms, including wandering from home, episodes of terror, rage or depression, but Susan says that he is "not always sure where he is or what is happening around him". But she went on to explain that the singer "doesn't think anything's wrong with him" because he's not in any pain and says he feels "great".

The family - chiefly his wife and his son, Danny, who has managed Bennett's career for the past 40 years (and who led the Verve record label between 2016 and 2019) - told AARP that they felt that with this new - and perhaps final - album scheduled for release this spring, it was time to disclose his condition.

The singer's neurologist Gayatra Devi, told AARP that, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bennett's touring schedule "kept him on his toes and also stimulated his brain in a significant way".
