Dolly Parton Turned Down The Presidential Medal Of Freedom Twice

Dolly Parton Turned Down The Presidential Medal Of Freedom Twice”

This nine-time Grammy victor and Country Music Hall of Fame member, known for hits including the iconic "I Will Always Love You" and the working woman anthem "9 To 5", just keeps adding to her projects.

Dolly Parton revealed to The Today Show that she was offered the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Donald Trump on two separate occasions but had to beg off both times. Last year, she released the holiday album A Holly Dolly Christmas, collaborated with author and journalist Robert K. Oermann on the book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, and released the holiday movie Christmas on the Square for Netflix. I couldn't accept it because my husband was ill.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert previous year, when the subject came up, Obama expressed how "shocked" he was that she hadn't received it yet.

For her part. Dolly says she's not even sure she deserves the award - but, of course, she does. But it seems the 46th president, too, could come up short in an effort to honor her, as Parton explained she might not actually want the Medal of Freedom at all.

"That's a mistake. I'm shocked", Obama said when asked during an interview with CBS' Stephen Colbert how the singer had not received the award. So, I'm not sure. "I'm surprised", Mr. Obama said.

"I'm just happy that anything I do can help somebody else, and when I donated the money to the Covid fund, I just wanted it to do good", she said last November. "But that's a nice compliment for people to think I might deserve it". Per executive-order update by President Kennedy in 1963, the medal now is given to citizens who have made an "especially meritorious contribution" to the security or national interests of the USA, to world peace or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Obama gave the Medal of Freedom to several musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder, as well as actor Sidney Poitier, TV legend Oprah Winfrey, and Biden.

During his administration, Trump bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom to mainly political and sports figures.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1945 and is the country's highest civilian honor. "'5 to 9′ seemed to be a ideal thing when they pitched it".
