Ford vehicles will run on Android Auto starting in 2023”

Google will be helping Ford in a number of ways, but the most impactful news for end users is that future Ford and Lincoln vehicles will have Android-powered infotainment systems with Google apps built into the user interface. This will allow Ford to tap into the tech giant's expertise in data analytics technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Ford on Monday announced a partnership with Google that will see the automaker use Android Automotive to power the infotainment systems in its vehicles beginning in 2023.

Thomas Kurian, chief executive officer of Google Cloud, is trying to sell the Alphabet Inc. company's computing and storage services through broad strategic partnerships.

Today's announcement marks a bit of a turnaround for Ford, which had previously banded together with a group of other auto manufacturers with the explicit goal of keeping Google's role in the automotive industry to a minimum.

The automaker will continue to use other cloud service providers and collaborate with other tech companies such as Amazon.com, he said. This work will go beyond the actual driving experience, too, and include work on modernizing Ford's product development, manufacturing and supply chain, as well as predictive maintenance in Ford's plants. During this phase, Ford aims to accelerate its digital transformation and improve its connected vehicle experience, something it hopes to achieve with Google.

While this is unexplored territory for Ford, it's not the first partnership of its kind for Google. back in 2017, Volvo announced that it would begin using Android Auto, which also trickled down to Volvo's electric vehicle brand, known as Polestar. They will continue to help us in the near term.

Does Google rule the internet? "This integration will unleash our teams to innovate for Ford and Lincoln customers while seamlessly providing access to Google's world-class apps and services", Farley said.

Drivers can expect to have Google's voice assistant and Google Maps built in to vehicles, as well as access to in-car apps from the Google Play store and over-the-air updates for vehicle software. But, Ford's implementation will be different, McClelland said. Plus, there will be a collaborative Ford/Google team called Team Upshift that will work on projects "ranging from developing new retail experiences when buying a vehicle, creating new ownership offers based on data, and more".

Android in the auto also enables Ford and third-party developers to build apps that provide a constantly improving and ever-more-personalized ownership experience.
