Google shutters internal game studios

Google shutters internal game studios”

Google has announced that it will be winding down Stadia Games and Entertainment and internal game development, and it will focus on supporting developers and publishers with Stadia's streaming technology.

According to Harrison, Google believes working with developers and publishers to bring third-party games to the platform is the "best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business". Apparently, the whole endeavor has been costlier than anticipated.

As a result, the company is going to stop investing in the SG&E team, "beyond any near-term planned games".

"The development of exclusive content for a platform has been one of the most time-tested strategies in video gaming since the dawn of the console age", Piscatella said "We'll have to see how Stadia's next phase develops to determine how much this move may impact its trajectory as a platform".

The in-house studio will finish games that are almost complete as it winds down operations, according to Google.

First-party titles are critical for any game platform to stand out and attract new users.

Launched in late 2019, Google's game streaming service has seemingly struggled to capture the attention many thought it might, especially as competition from Microsoft's own service, Project XCloud and Amazon's Luna streaming service have ramped up.

Google recently added iOS support for Google Stadia. Exclusive Stadia titles are in development from studios like Harmonix and Supermassive. "We're committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward". This suggests that this work could occur outside of Stadia. "Having games streamed to any screen is the future of this industry". The other downside to Stadia is the cost. Players can purchase games through the service and also subscribe to Stadia Pro for $9.99, which nets discounts and free games every month. But to play the biggest games, you have to buy them through Stadia's digital store, usually at full price.
