Mets owner deactivates Twitter account after personal threats to family

Mets owner deactivates Twitter account after personal threats to family”

Till the time he was active, Steve Cohen used Twitter largely to engage with fans of the New York Mets baseball team after he bought a majority stake previous year.

Before closing his Twitter account, Cohen - the richest owner in baseball, worth more than $14.5 billion - responded to the controversy Tuesday by tweeting, "Rough crowd on Twitter tonight".

The owner of the New York Mets introduced that he has canceled his Twitter account, after his household acquired threats for "misinformation" that was not associated to that baseball workforce.

"I've actually loved the discussions with Mets followers on Twitter, however this week, it was all overshadowed by misinformation, unrelated to the Mets, which resulted in our household receiving private threats", Cohen mentioned Saturday, via a press release issued by the membership.

Cohen's hedge fund lost money in the GameStop stock craze, according to Tim Healey of Newsday.

On Thursday, Cohen got into a heated debate with blogger Dave Portnoy, who founded the sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports.

Point72 Asset Management came to the aid of Melvin Capital Management, which was heavily invested in the potential decline of GameStop stock.

Hedge funds which have gambled on GameStop's downfall have misplaced billions of after small buyers have made acquisitions to ship shares larger.

Cohen first took a stake in the Mets in 2012. Point72 suffered losses mainly due to infusing close to $750 million into Melvin Capital.

The last sentence of Cohen's statement, in which the owner said this week's events "in no way affect our resources", is also noteworthy because it's possible Mets fans started to worry that his hedge fund entanglements were beginning to negatively impact the club's payroll. The tweets have disappeared now that Cohen's account is inactive, but you can read some of them here.
