NHS Hero Captain Sir Tom Moore Has Died Aged 100”

Captain Tom Moore, the British Second World War veteran who raised millions of pounds for health service workers on the frontline of the battle against COVID-19, has died aged 100, his family said on Tuesday.

Captain Sir Tom was hospitalised at Bedford Hospital with COVID-19 on January 31 after weeks of being treated for pneumonia.

The British veteran of World War II became an worldwide sensation last spring when his modest offer to raise money for the U.K.'s National Health Service ultimately collected more than $40 million in pledges. Great Britain has the highest coronavirus death toll in Europe.

Sir Tom was a source of inspiration for the country during one of the darkest periods in recent memory, and in July 2020, he was awarded with a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II.

In a statement, Hannah and Lucy said: 'We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime. When Captain Tom finished his 100th lap on April 16, a military honor guard lined the path.

'We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother.

At the time, NHS Charities Together Chief Executive, Ellie Orton, said: "If it wasn't for him and the remarkable fundraising her has done, we wouldn't be able to [provide] the extra support that we give to the NHS".

North Thanet representative Sir Roger Gale said that the NHS hero was "an fantastic man who lived a great and full life, captured the heart of the nation and made us smile in the darkness".

"The past year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable".

Captain Sir Tom also wrote an autobiography and helped set up a charity. "He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of", his daughters said.

Moore won the nation's hearts last April by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, raising £33 million during the first national lockdown.

"Whilst he'd been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever".

Buckingham Palace says the royal family's thoughts are with his family and the Queen will be sending a private message to pass on their condolences. "Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Cpt Sir Tom and his family at Windsor a year ago", a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said. "Her thoughts, and those of the Royal Family, are with them, recognizing the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world".
