Prince Harry accepts apology, damages in U.K. libel suit”

The Duke of Sussex is expected to formally settle a High Court libel claim against the publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline over allegations he snubbed the Royal Marines after stepping down as a senior royal.

As royal sources reveal possible plans for Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, to visit the United Kingdom in the summer of 2021, the Daily Mail reports that his wife Meghan Markle will not be joining him for "personal and practical" reasons.

Lawyers acting for the Prince, who served for a decade in the British army, called the story a "personal attack" and said in court documents that Harry was "frustrated and saddened" because the articles diminished his credibility with veterans.

Founded by the duke, the charitable organization runs the Invictus Games, which his official website describes as "an global adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veteran".

The amount of the damages is undisclosed, but is said to be "substantial".

But Harry's lawyers said in court documents that The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline "disregarded the claimant's reputation in its eagerness to publish a barely researched and one-sided article in pursuit of the imperative to sell newspapers and attract readers to its website".

The Mail on Sunday published the article "Top General accuses Harry of Turning his Back on the Marines" on October 25, 2020, and the MailOnline published an nearly identical piece.

The Mail on Sunday story claimed Harry had turned his back on the armed forces.

The Duke of Sussex was appointed Captain General Royal Marines by the Queen in 2017, but is not using the title at the moment following the Sussexes stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020.

Mr Justice Nicklin is expected to hear details of the settlement of Harry's claim against Associated Newspapers at a brief remote hearing on Monday. This coming March, there will be a 12-month review into Harry and Meghan's agreement in which the title will be examined.

The younger son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, represented by attorney Jenny Afia, said that Harry has made "repeated and concerted efforts to continue to support the Royal Marines and other members of the Armed Forces" in the aftermath of his departure.

The Mail on Sunday printed an apology in December but it wasn't enough to stop the lawsuit.

"It's extraordinary and raises all kinds of questions about what the Sussexes were thinking", says Lady Campbell, who has published a number of books on the British royal family. They did no such thing.
