UK Summons Myanmar Ambassador Over Military Coup”

"Whether or not the Myanmar military's actions are consistent with the '08 Constitution, [Human Rights Watch] and [Human Rights Watch Burma] believes they are violating fundamental human rights by arbitrarily arresting political leaders and activists", she said.

The new parliament was expected to endorse the election results and approve the next government.

News of Suu Kyi's detention broke early Monday in Japan.

The election commission rejected the claims last week, stating there was no evidence to support them.

Min Aung Hlaing was already sanctioned by the US government in 2019 over the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslim communities from western Myanmar, and he is probably gambling that Western powers will hold back on reimposing more sweeping sanctions out of fear for pushing his country closer to China.

"We call on Burmese military leaders to release all government and civilian government leaders, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and civil society leaders", the United States' top diplomat said in a statement.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States "stands with the people of Burma in their aspirations for democracy, freedom, peace, and development", and called on the military to immediately reverse its actions.

At least two people were injured at the protest, which took place outside Myanmar's embassy in the Thai capital, where at least 200 people had gathered, including Thai and Myanmar citizens.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar's independence hero, General Aung San, who was assassinated in 1947, emerged as a leader in the pro-democracy rallies and in the NLD.

Her time in detention made her an global icon, and she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. But in recent years she has been condemned for presiding over a campaign of violence by Burma's military against the minority Rohingya Muslim community, which saw over 1 million Rohingya flee to neighboring Bangladesh.

The move prolongs the power of Aung Hlaing, who is supposed to age out as army chief this summer.

The state power will be handed over to Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing, the TV said in a statement.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod said "military under civilian control is a key democratic principle".

Japan's response contrasts with the speedy, often harsher reaction by much of the worldwide community, including the other members of the Quad.

The November general elections were the second since Myanmar began its transition away from a military dictatorship toward a democracy. "Given the military's horrific human rights record, we are deeply concerned for the safety of those detained and of further serious violations that could happen".

The White House, in a statement, added, "The United States opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of recent elections or impede Myanmar's democratic transition and will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed". But the developments in Myanmar represent a daunting challenge for the Biden administration and other Western governments.

Suu Kyi's party released a statement on one of its Facebook pages saying the military's actions were unjustified and went against the constitution and the will of voters.

The relationship between the NLD and Tatmadaw has deteriorated as Suu Kyi sought to expand civilian control by amending a constitution that guarantees the military one-quarter of representation in the country's parliament. That would clear the way for him to take a civilian leadership role if the junta holds elections in a year's time as promised.

"China and Myanmar are friendly neighbours".

Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Zwar Minn had been summoned to the Foreign Office, a ministry spokesperson said.

Myanmar was the first stop of a regional goodwill tour last month by China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, who pledged to furnish Chinese-made coronavirus vaccine to Myanmar for free.
