US Democrats file budget resolution for Covid-19 relief”

Ten members of the Republican Senate caucus met with President Joe Biden on Monday, presenting a slimmed down proposal to Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus plan.

The White House plan would send $1,400 checks to most Americans.

The list includes Sens.

Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, said on Sunday that Biden talked with the Republican group that came up with the $600 billion stimulus plan.

"No one expected that in a two-hour meeting", Collins told reporters after the meeting with Biden.

The White House, however, said in a readout of the meeting that Mr. Biden "will not settle for a package that fails to meet the moment".

Republicans have cautioned against aggressive spending so soon after the most recent bill, totaling $900 billion, passed in late December.

Republicans are proposing the full $1,000 checks for individuals earning above $50,000 and couples earning about $100,000. But from there, the two plans drastically diverge.

It would also eliminate some elements of Biden's plan that Republicans dislike, such as increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that history is filled with "the costs of small thinking".

Biden met with a group of Republican senators who have proposed a drastically slimmer coronavirus relief package than the United States dollars 1.9 trillion measure he is offering.

"With the virus posing a grave threat to the country, and economic conditions grim for so many, the need for action is urgent, and the scale of what must be done is large", Psaki said in a statement.

Passage of the new relief legislation would not only affect Americans and businesses reeling during a pandemic that has killed about 440 000 people in the United States but offer an early test of Biden's promise to work to bridge the partisan divide in Washington.

Asked if Biden had shown a willingness to reduce his $1.9 trillion top line, Republican Sen.

"The risk is not that it is too big ... the risk is that it is too small".

President Biden's American Relief Plan comes with a price tag of roughly $1.9 trillion.

Republicans are siding with Biden on $160 billion to speed up COVID-19 vaccine development and distributing; expanded testing and contacting tracing; and additional personal protective equipment.

The first two rounds of stimulus checks - $1,200 past year, and $600 last month - provided full payments to individuals making up to $75,000 and married couples making up to $150,000. That's less than Biden's proposal of $1,400 direct payments at higher incomes levels, up to $300,000 for some households. "I'm open to negotiate those things", he said during a January 22 public appearance. By doing that, however, all 50 Senate Democrats would have to agree to the proposal, which would allow Harris to cast the tiebreaking vote. Once both the House and Senate pass the resolutions, the committees can get to work on the reconciliation bill.
