Vietnam shuts schools due to virus outbreak ahead of Lunar New Year”

The ongoing 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) on Saturday elected the party's 13th central committee.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Mr Nguyen Phu Trong for getting re-elected as the general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). On Monday, the health ministry reported 33 more cases, most in the capital Hanoi.

Trong, who emerged on top in a power struggle at the last congress in 2016 and has spearheaded a "blazing furnace" crackdown on corruption in the last five years, was granted an exception to party rules which say people over the age of 65 should retire.

In so doing, he added, they will jointly steer the China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership along the path of sustained, healthy and stable development, bring more benefits to the people in both countries, and make positive contributions to promoting regional and global peace, development and win-win cooperation.

In the 2021-2025 period, Vietnam will strive to achieve an annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of between 6.5 percent and 7 percent, according to the announcement.

He was elected general secretary in 2011.

In his closing remarks, the party chief said that the congress had been "very successful", completing all items on its working agenda ahead of schedule.

"China and Vietnam are friendly socialist neighbors and also a community with a shared future of strategic significance", Xi said.

He thanked media outlets from home and overseas for their timely reporting, which contributed to the success of the congress. Another 20 alternate members were also elected to the central committee.

The UK's Reuters highlighted Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's appeal for strengthening the Party's discipline and its consistent policy against corruption.

Almost 1,600 delegates representing over 5.1 million members of the CPV attended the congress held from January 25 to February 1.
