Province Confirms 745 New Cases of COVID-19 This Morning”

"We anticipate fluctuations in case numbers over the next few days". The province is also introducing a provincial antigen screening program for the expansion of rapid testing in high priority settings, such as long-term care homes.

On top of this new action plan, the province continues to call on the federal government to impose a temporary travel ban on flights coming from countries where new COVID-19 variants are being detected. Cases among residents at Caressant Care Retirement Home Woodstock have climbed to 40, with two more positive infections confirmed since Monday.

With resolved cases now sitting at 2,109, there are 153 active cases in the two counties.

The number of new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario has dropped significantly, but it is being attributed to a data issue.

"At this time, there is no indication that any cases identified in the outbreak had recently travelled or had contact with a person who travelled recently", the health unit said in a statement.

Tuesday's cases are lower than Monday's 1,969 which was also affected by TPH merging their data system with the province. They did not specify which other regions may also have contributed to Tuesday's underestimation of cases. Fatal cases have fallen by 20 per cent to an average 128 deaths per day.

The province has reported 109 lab-confirmed cases of the United Kingdom variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7).

Elliott says there are 334 new cases in Peel, 124 in York Region, and 65 in Niagara.

The province's total case count since the start of the pandemic now sits at 270,925. Of the new deaths, four were residents of long-term care homes. The province's death toll is now 6,238. Of those patients, 341 are in the intensive care unit (ICU) and 253 of those 341 patients are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Meanwhile another 2,297 cases have been labelled resolved, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 247,236.

The province completed 28,552 tests yesterday.

According to data from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, there are 230 outbreaks in long-term-care facilities, 931 confirmed active cases of positive residents, and 914 confirmed active cases of positive staff.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 87.7 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 23 to Jan. 29, which is a decrease of 20.6 per cent compared to Jan. 17 to Jan. 23 when the average weekly incidence rate was 110.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Following an announcement from the federal government detailing new global travel restrictions, the Ontario government has implemented a six-point plan to stop the spread of new COVID-19 variants in the province.

We now have 1,192 COVID-19 patients in the hospital with 341 people in the ICU and 252 in the ICU on a ventilator. A total of 72,057 people in Ontario have received their second dose of the vaccine and are considered fully inoculated.
