Ontario’s positivity rate hits 3-month low, over 1,500 new cases”

Ontario reported 1,563 new cases of COVID-19 and 88 more deaths linked to the virus on Thursday.

Public health officials have noted, however, that updates to a provincial database are causing data fluctuations in this week's case counts. The last time that number was that low was on October 24 when the same rate was reported by the province.

The province reports almost 64,500 tests completed, more than double the almost 28,600 tests completed two days ago.

Schools in Toronto, Peel, and York regions will reopen February 16. Tuesday's numbers saw the province dip below 1,000 for the first time since November 5. It is the lowest positivity rate the province has seen since October.

So far, Ontario has recorded 152 cases of a variant that first emerged in the United Kingdom and one case of another that first emerged in South Africa.

Province-wide, about 500,000 kids chose to stay at home to learn this school year, which left almost 1.5 million attending classes.

The rolling seven-day average of new cases drops to 1,600.

There are 915 active cases across the region, as 80 cases were marked resolved.

A total of 355,055 doses of a vaccine have been administered in the province so far. Another 1,956 cases were resolved in the previous 24-hour period.

We now have 1,192 COVID-19 patients in the hospital with 341 people in the ICU and 252 in the ICU on a ventilator.

Cathy Abraham, president of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association said the reopening of all schools to in-person learning over the next two weeks is good news. Hospitalizations are down over 200 from one week ago.

Among the hospitalized, 323 are in the ICU and 241 are on ventilators.
