Tokyo Olympics 2020 chief sparks controversy with sexist remarks

Tokyo Olympics 2020 chief sparks controversy with sexist remarks”

"We have about seven women at the organising committee but everyone understands their place", he said.

"I am not thinking to resign", Mori said.

The remarks led to an uproar in Japan where women are grossly under-represented in politics and boardrooms.

Mori's remarks provoked laughter from some JOC Council members.

Criticism of Mori's comments flooded the internet.

"Regarding my remark yesterday, it was going against the mentality of the Olympics and Paralympics", he told reporters.

During an online meeting of JOC councilors Wednesday, Yoshiro Mori said that women talk too much in meetings and suggested that speaking time for women should be limited, referring to the JOC's plan to increase the number of women on its board.

The gaffe-prone Mori did not dispute the Japanese media reports which said he had complained that "board of directors meetings with many women take a lot of time".

The changes, published today in the International Olympic Committee's first official "playbook" for the Tokyo 2021 summer games, which were deferred from 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic struck, offer a first glimpse at what the massive sports festival will look like in the age of the coronavirus.

His comment came when he was asked about the presence of few women on the board of the Japanese Olympic Committee. But he said he would not be resigning from the post, saying he has a responsibility to hold a successful Games.

'When you increase the number of female executive members, if their speaking time isn't restricted to a certain extent, they have difficulty finishing, which is annoying, ' he was quoted as saying.

Mori said he had been taken to task by the female members of his family as a result.

On social media, Twitter users quickly began calling for Mori to resign.

According to the committee's governance code, established in 2019, it should be aiming to make sure that 40% seats on the board are filled by women.

"I deeply regret my comments and would like to sincerely apologise to anyone whom I have offended".

"His comments run counter to the spirit of Olympics that denounces discrimination and calls for friendship, solidarity and fairness", she said in a tweet.

"This morning, my daughter and granddaughter scolded me as well".

Former world judo champion Kaori Yamaguchi, who attending the JOC meeting, warned his remarks could hamper public trust in the organisation of the postponed Olympic and Paralympic Games.
